English is a wide language and becoming fluent can be defined differently depending on your goals.
What is fluency in speaking English ?
Fluency is the ability to converse fluidly, comfortably and without thinking. It is the smoothness or flow with which sounds, syllables, words and phrases are joined together when speaking quickly.
Fluency is basically one’s ability to be understood by both native and non-native listeners.
Some people add the accent to the meaning of fluency, they consider the ones who speak with an accent as fluent in English. Some others add writing skills to fluency and say that to be fluent you should speak and write quickly and easily.
Now that we defined fluency, let’s talk about the time it takes to become fluent
Fluency depends on your goals
Whether you consider fluency related to both writing and speaking skills or you want to be fluent in English speaking skills only, it’s up to you to say that you became fluent or not. Each one of us has different goals, some students learn English because of an exam, others to get a job and others consider it just a hobby. The first question to ask yourself is “why do you learn English?”
Setting your goals would be the first step to decide how much time does it take to become fluent in English.
To be fluent in English depends on your efforts
We know that the best methods to learn English are the natural methods and those that take less effort. But if you consider learning English (and becoming fluent in English) without listening to English everyday, I think this is the biggest lie you’re lying to yourself !
If you listen to English everyday, practice English everyday and you are really emerging into English, you will become fluent in English in less time then if you don’t carry.
My advice for you is to have a schedule, consider your time, your tasks and try to add learning English (listening, practicing and reading) to your schedule without abusing of course (remember : don’t overdo it ! )
